Case Details
Aloui and journalist Amer Ayyad of “Al-Zaytouna” TV were arrested on October 3, 2021, following the broadcasting of a poem in a television program considered defamatory to Kais Saied, and tarnishing the image of the Tunisian army.
The matter relates to presenter Ayyad reciting a poem by the Iraqi poet Ahmed Matar during the last episode he presented from his program on the private Tunisian channel Al-Zaytouna, following which the military judiciary launched this case, according to the confirmations of their lawyer.
The investigating judge charged them with “undermining the morale of the army, attributing untrue matters to a public official, and committing a heinous act against the head of state”.
April 8, 2022: The Military Court of First Instance issued an initial sentence of 4 months in prison against Amer Ayyad and 3 months against Aloui.
December 22, 2022: The Military Court of Appeal reduced the sentence to one month for Aloui and two months for Amer Ayyad.
