The Dean of the Investigating Judges at the Court of First Instance in Tunis decided yesterday, Thursday, October 7, to lift the measure preventing Abdellatif Mekki from travelling outside the borders of the Wardiya local district, in the context of the case related to the death of the late former MP Jilani Dabboussi. Other restrictions remain imposed on Mekki, as the investigating judge decided to maintain the travel ban against him and the ban on appearing in the media.
It is worth noting that Mekki’s case relates to accusations related to negligence and mistreatment that Daboussi may have been subjected to during his detention in 2014, when Mekki held the position of Minister of Health. Mekki has previously been accused of negligence, but final rulings against him in this case have not yet been issued, and investigations are still ongoing into his possible role in this incident.
The Freedom for Tunisia Observatory notes that the ongoing restrictions on Mekki, particularly those related to freedom of movement and expression, raise questions about the justifications for the precautionary measures implemented and their compatibility with the guarantees of fundamental rights.
