The Tunisian authorities have referred the case of former President Moncef Marzouki to the judiciary specializing in terrorism cases, where he faces twenty charges, including inciting internal unrest, incitement, and spreading rumors. Marzouki was informed of this development by his brother, Mokhles Marzouki, who was summoned to the Kantaoui police station (Sousse Governorate) to deliver the official notification.
It is worth noting that Marzouki had previously been sentenced in absentia to four years in prison in December 2021, on charges of “attacking external state security.”
In February 2024, a Tunisian court issued another sentence in absentia to eight years in prison, on charges related to “attacking state security and incitement.”
These developments come in the context of a series of judicial proceedings targeting opposition political figures in Tunisia, raising concerns about respect for human rights and fair trial guarantees.
