Tunisian authorities have arrested businessman and president of the Sfax Sports Club Abdelaziz Makhloufi, on charges related, according to the authorities, to financial corruption and mismanagement of the club’s funds.
Judicial sources indicated that the charges against Makhloufi relate to the management and disposal of the club’s resources. This arrest comes after an unannounced visit by President Kais Saied to the complex on October 30, 2024, where he mentioned suspicions of corruption and mismanagement in the management of state property.
The charges against him include financial mismanagement and theft related to agricultural equipment and fuel materials, in addition to the decline in annual olive oil production. Jawhar Ladhar, the official spokesman for Makhloufi’s defense team, confirmed that the investigations also include a number of employees and executives working at the complex.
This measure comes as part of a campaign that the authorities say aims to combat corruption, but the recurrence of these charges against prominent figures raises concerns that the judiciary is being used as a tool to silence voices and settle scores. The Observatory believes that these practices coincide with increasing pressure on public figures in Tunisia, where the judiciary is being used to restrict freedom of expression and the freedom to independently manage civil and sports institutions.
