The Public Prosecution Office at the Economic and Financial Judicial Pole authorized the agents of the National Unit for the Investigation of Complex Financial Crimes at the Judicial Police Department in El-Gorjani, on Sunday, November 3, to detain former Minister of Agriculture Samir Bettaieb and his former chief of staff, as part of the investigations related to the Henchir Chaal case.
Bettaib and his chief of staff were interrogated, in addition to a former Director General of the International Lands Office, on suspicions of mismanagement in the management of Henchir Chaal, a state-owned agricultural complex. The charges against them include suspicion of money laundering and an employee exploiting his position to harm the administration.
It is noteworthy that Samir Bettaieb was previously arrested in October 2021 in connection with a case related to a media equipment deal for the Ministry of Agriculture, then was temporarily released in December 2021 after being interrogated by the investigating judge at the Economic and Financial Judicial Pole.
The Tunisian authorities say that they have launched an anti-corruption campaign, but these developments are part of a campaign targeting public figures, opponents of the regime, and members of previous governments, which raises fears that the judiciary is being used as a tool to settle political scores and restrict freedom of public action.
