Position: Former Tunisian Minister of the Interior.
Term: March 2023 to May 2024.
Tasks and responsibilities: Kamel Al-Feki served as Minister of the Interior during a period that witnessed an escalation in violations against civil liberties. He played a major role in suppressing protests against the regime led by President Kais Saied, as he refused to grant permits to a number of demonstrations organized by the opposition, such as the “National Salvation Front”. Al-Feki enjoyed strong support from the president and was part of his inner circle. He was also involved in responding to criticism in relation to the treatment of sub-Saharan African migrants.
Relations: Al-Feki is considered one of President Kais Saied’s closest aides, and has supported him in taking repressive decisions against the opposition and civil society groups, including dealing with the issue of African migrants and responding to international criticism directed at Tunisia on this issue.
Human Rights Violations
Repression of the opposition: Refusing to grant permits for protests, and using force against political opponents, leading to the arrest of several political figures.
Treatment of migrants: He was involved in harsh policies against sub-Saharan African migrants, as his ministry was accused of ignoring serious human rights violations, including the forced expulsion of migrants.
Complaints & Lawsuits
International legal proceedings: The Observatory seeks to file complaints with:
- The United Nations: To highlight human rights violations in the treatment of migrants and the suppression of civil liberties.
- The African Union: To file complaints regarding the treatment of sub-Saharan African migrants.
- The International Criminal Court: Violations can be investigated as crimes against humanity, especially in relation to the treatment of migrants, political arrests, and violations of international law and human rights.
